Our Vision and Aims for Geography

At Olive Hill, we aim to inspire our pupils’ natural curiosity and fascination about the world and its people in an engaging and memorable way, that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We feel it is imperative that we nurture their inquisitive thinking and questioning skills and equip our learners with the ability to be able to interpret what they see.

Our aims for Geography are to develop:

  • Children’s knowledge of diverse places, people, resources as well as natural and human environments;

  • A deep understanding of the processes that generate key physical and human geographical features of the world;

  • Geographical skills such as map reading, analysis of atlases and globes and data gathering through fieldwork.

Through carefully planned topics, we provide the children many opportunities to develop and apply geographical skills that help them understand, present, analyse and communicate a range of information both collaboratively and as an individual. These life skills are transferable and can be used in all areas of the curriculum.

Geography is taught so that each year’s knowledge builds on the previous year, ensuring the children can achieve depth in their learning.

This journey begins in EYFS under the curriculum area ‘Understanding the world,’ where children are encouraged to explore their outdoor area and investigate the plants and animals found there.

It continues into key stage one, where we begin in detail to look at our local area and make comparisons with other areas and countries.

In key stage two, Olive Hill pupils will leave year 6 with an increased confidence and understanding of geographical facts and vocabulary as well as the skills to explore their world and become responsible and valued citizens of our society.
