Friday 15th November
Happy Friday!
Today the school was full of very spotty children! Thank you to all who made a donation today and Mrs Carpenter has informed me that so far, we have raised over £215 for the Children in Need appeal.
In our Monday morning assembly, the we discussed the significance of Remembrance Day and the tradition of wearing poppies as a symbol of remembrance. The whole school observed a two-minute silence, and the children all showed the upmost respect. In the afternoon, year six visited the memorial at Shell Corner to pay their respects. There, they had the opportunity to interact with knowledgeable members of the public, allowing them to connect their classroom learning to real-life experiences.
Year two had an exciting day exploring the seven continents on Monday and they all looked amazing in their explorer outfits. The immersive experience allowed them to cross the oceans and visit a landmark in each of the continents. During the afternoon, the children looked at the skills and equipment needed to survive in the wild. They even got the chance to put their learning into practice and made dens in the classroom.
On Wednesday, year four had their environment day which included a special visitor from South Staff Water. The children took part in a variety of activities including creating and presenting a news report, exploring school for water crimes, coming up with a solution to reduce the amount of water we use, making water efficiency stickers and playing top trumps. The children also had the chance to read ‘The Lorax’ and created artwork in the style of Dr Seuss.
This week is national Anti-Bullying week. Anti-Bullying Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of bullying of young people, with an emphasis on prevention and effective responses to bullying. The theme for this year is ‘Choose Respect.’ We have an expectation at Olive Hill that every member of our community is Ready, Respectful and Safe. Our ethos promotes kindness, and we often discuss with the children the importance of being kind, and that in a world where they can be anything being kind has a big impact on others. It is vital that our children know to speak to an adult if someone has been unkind to them or made them feel sad.
With the weather turning colder, please make sure your child is suitably dressed with a warm coat, waterproof shoes and gloves etc. Please also make sure you label all of your child’s belongings including the gloves as they do have a habit of leaving them around the school.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
