Friday 28th March
Happy Friday!
With the arrival of sunnier days, our guinea pigs have been basking in the sunshine, much to everyone’s delight! It’s been a busy and creative time across the school, with lots of performance practice and exhibition preparations underway.
Across school, year six have been getting hands-on with history, crafting their own canopic jars using a paper-mâché base and salt dough heads. Year five have been experimenting with GarageBand, composing their own music inspired by La Bamba. Meanwhile, year one had an exciting trip to Saltwells Nature Reserve, where they explored the great outdoors in search of signs of spring. Their guide took them on a walk of the woodland, and they discussed the different seasons, which animals go into hibernation and what wildlife and flowers they should start to see over the coming months.
On Thursday, Mrs. Higgins hosted teachers from across our academy trust to share insights into how we teach reading here at Olive Hill. Our visitors were joined by members of year six, who spoke with confidence and enthusiasm about their love of reading and their personal reading journeys. It was wonderful to see our pupils sharing their experiences so articulately!
Today, the whole school was treated to an electrifying assembly and workshop from Ben from Rock Steady. He introduced the children to different instruments, demonstrating how they bring popular songs to life. Some of our staff even got up to showcase their musical talents—much to the children’s enjoyment!
Looking ahead to next week, we are thrilled to welcome author Farhana Islam into school. On Wednesday, she will be speaking to years three-six about her latest book ‘The Adventures of Mina Mahmood.’ If you’d like to purchase a copy that the children can get signed, payments can be made through SchoolMoney.
Have a wonderful weekend and wishing all the mums a happy Mother’s Day!
